The Dublin Port Tunnel

The Dublin Port Tunnel is the first project of its kind in Ireland. While there is a tunnel in Cork, Jack Lynch Tunnel, the Port Tunnel in Dublin is on a completely different scale. Is there a budget for the tunnel of 752 million euros, and it is estimated by the date of completion, within hours 7Million man will have been spent building the tunnel. The project is one of the largest, currently working in Europe.

The tunnel is designed to carry heavy goods vehicles from the M50/M1 to the port, and remove them from the streets in and around the city. There are two tunnels under construction, one will take traffic to the port (south), while the other will take traffic out of the harbor (north). The total distance of 5.7 km tunnel and it is estimated that the journey will take only 6 minuets.

Safety is always a big concern on projects like this, and the designers were careful to include a number of security features such as pedestrian paths between the tunnels and emergency telephones every 250 meters. We are huge fans that will improve air quality in the tunnel and remove smoke in case of fire erupt. There is also an effect of gradual enlightenment to the outputs so that drivers will not be blinded by the darkness to the light guide.

Among the critical for the tunnel is the fact that they are that it is not enough to keep excellent truck, those that are superior to the normal truck container. There is also criticism of the tunnel during construction because of rising costs and noise levels due to the huge boring machines that were working in many residential areas. Other arguments against the tunnel are, most roads lead to more traffic and there are cheaper options available to the government to link the port with the M50.

The benefits that the tunnel will bring in Dublin according to the Dublin City Council are removing heavy vehicles from the roads near Dublin, and the shot on the effects of a better environment and better circulation of traffic, reduced travel time for trucks traveling to and from the port and roads safer. The tunnel is scheduled to open during the summer of 2006, and only then will the benefits can really be measured .......
